A Serious But Not Ponderous Book About Relativity
Author: Walter Scheider
Pub Date: 11/2000
Trade Paperback, List Price $14.95, 5.5" x 8.5"
Book Description: The title describes it. It is "a serious but not ponderous book" on Special Relativity for the non-specialist. It uses introductory high school level algebra to make possible the depth and thoroughness and unambiguous definitions of terms -- qualities that tend to be sacrificed in the math-less or math-sparse 'popular' books on Relativity. At the same time, this book is written for the general reader, giving plain-English explanations for things which the text books often don't explain at all, because they assume that they are obvious from the formal and mathematical argument. The style has been described as "fast-moving and breezy."More information....

To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design.
Author: Henry Petroski
Pub Date: 3/2001
Trade Paperback, $15.95
Book Description The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best known examples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action -- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seen tossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage), the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- and many lesser known but equally informative examples.

Author: Donald Norman
Pub Date: 5/2005
Trade Paperback, $15.95, 272 pages
Book Description
Did you ever wonder why cheap wine tastes better in fancy glasses? Or why washing and polishing your car seems to make it drive better? New research has shown that attractive things really do work better. In the last decade, the design community has made products easier to use, largely due to Donald Norman's The Design of Everyday Things. But as he demonstrates in this book, we don't just use a product, we become emotionally involved with it.

Invention by Design: How Engineers Get from Thought to Thing
Author: Henry Petroski Pub Date: Trade Paperback, $14.95, 256 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.73 x 9.19 x 6.10
Book Description From Publishers Weekly
Invention, Petroski has steadfastly maintained, comes from a failure of design. The paperclip that can only be used in one direction, that becomes easily tangled in a box, or that tears the paper has led inventors to a cycle of improvements and patents. That's the story of the case studies here, many of which Petroski has used in other books - the paperclip, zipper and aluminum can appeared in The Evolution of Useful Things, the pencil in The Pencil; and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in Engineers of Dreams. But Petroski still manages to add something new.

Book Description This surprising book may appear to be about the simple things of life--forks, paper clips, zippers--but in fact it is a far-flung historical adventure on the evolution of common culture. To trace the fork's history, Duke University professor of civil engineering Henry Petroski travels from prehistoric times to Texas barbecue to Cardinal Richelieu to England's Industrial Revolution to the American Civil War--and beyond. Each item described offers a cultural history lesson, plus there's plenty of engineering detail for those so inclined.

Description: Time Engineers is a unique educational game which teaches math, science, physics, plus history to students while time-traveling through 3D interactive environments. Time Engineers encourages trial-and-error experimentation, allowing students to adjust variable factors in their attempts to solve problems successfully. In Ancient Egypt, they experiment with ramps, workers, and the type of stone to build pyramids. During World War II, they help design a stealth submarine or a radar system. During the Middle Ages, students help design a drawbridge and a catapult. In each, there are several factors that students can adjust to be successful. The content, delivered through narration, text and interactive exercises, includes binary numbers, boolean logic, weirs and water flow, force balance and trajectory. Time Engineers comes complete with an electronic teacher's manual (PDF format) that was developed to support your efforts in the classroom or home. Key Features

24 MB Ram
8X speed CD-ROM drive or faster
Sound Card (preferred)
Mouse and Keyboard
Celeste Baine's Review: Time Engineers is a breath of fresh air! The problem solvers of the world will love this game. It's about time engineering was portrayed as fun even a bit adventurous.
As I began playing Time Engineers I was intrigued as I found a hole in the gate leading to a top secret project. I tried to get through a locked door by remembering concepts from my electronics classes. When that failed, I had to do the lesson on binary numbers. Although it wasn't extremely difficult, I learned and remembered a few things along the way. I highly recommend this engineering game as an excellent source of edutainment.
