Engineers week is a unique time that takes place every February during Presidents week. 40,000 engineers go into classrooms to promote the profession and give students a better understanding of engineering. This is our chance to show the world that engineering is an exciting career and that engineers really can do anything!
The solutions (for visiting engineers):
One class period presentation (50 minutes):
- First 5 minutes: Introductions
- Next 5-25 minutes: Show the DVD "Engineers Can Do Anything!" This video is about 20 minutes and provides a broad strokes overview of engineering. It has good music and was created by a 20-year old skateboarder so you can expect that it will keep the student's attention.
- Between 25-45 minutes. After the DVD, talk about what you do, why you decided to become an engineer and show examples of a few of the things/projects that you have worked on.
- Between 45-50 minutes: Answer questions and give away pins.
- 50 minutes: Class dismissed
Implementation Suggestions: When you purchase this package, give it to the teacher ahead of time (or have it shipped directly to them) so that he or she knows what you will be doing and can prepare for the day.
Requirements: DVD player and projector. Your show and tell materials (samples of your work).
90 minute presentation:

- Next 5-25 minutes: Show the DVD "Engineers Can Do Anything!" This video is about 20 minutes and provides a broad strokes overview of engineering. It has good music and was created by a 20-year old skateboarder so you can expect that it will keep the student's attention.
- Between 25-65 minutes. Do a hands-on activity from "Teaching Engineering Made Easy" to get the students engaged. Suggested activities are: How Do I Hover? (building a hovercraft: 35-40 minutes), Reactionary Rockets: (shooting rockets outside plus discussion: 45-60 minutes), Pasta Bridges: (60 minutes), The Indy Card Car (45-60 minutes), Two Feet Feat (building a tower: 30 minutes)
- Clean up activity.
- Between 70-85 minutes. Talk about what you do, why you decided to become an engineer and show samples of a few of the things that you have worked on.
- Between 85-90 minutes: Answer questions and give out pins.
- 90 minutes: Class dismissed.
Implementation Suggestions: When you purchase this package, give it to the teacher ahead of time (or have it shipped directly to them) so that he or she knows what you will be doing and can prepare for the day. Have the teacher read over the activity that you want to do so that they can lead the instruction while you watch the building process and make suggestions for problem-solving (be prepared to leave the DVD and Teacher Activity Guide with the teacher to support extended education and excitement about engineering careers.)
Requirements:
- DVD player and projector
- Materials for activity and photocopies of student sheets.
- Your show and tell materials (samples of your work).
