Pre-Engineering Summer Camps!

The following camp directory lists some of the summer camps for K-12 students in engineering throughout the United States and Canada that are and were previously offered. The directory lists camps that have been hosted by Universities and research centers in the past. Please note that all camps may not be offered every year and that new camps and programs are currently being added. Old or unsuccessful programs are always being eliminated or modified. A substantial number of programs specifically target minorities, women, and other groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. The programs offered change frequently, and this database is not comprehensive. This is only meant to be a guide to aid your search for engineering education preparation tools. Many of the programs offer scholarships and may have application deadlines as early as January. If you are interested in a program, please email, call or write the organization listed for an application and the most current information available.

Summer Engineering Camp - Project Discovery
Summer Engineering Camp - Project Discovery is a weeklong, intensive learning camp for high school students entering the ninth through 12th grades. Two sessions are offered, one in June and the second in July. Campers choose from six different engineering disciplines and work closely with KU faculty and graduate students as they complete a hands-on project. The camp lets students explore the different engineering disciplines and campers also get an up-close view of KU and engineering facilities. Students get to see how engineering and computer science play an essential role in improving the human condition. This outstanding engingeering summer camp costs $500 and covers housing, meals and laboratory materials. Enrollment in the 2011 camp is now open.

Mechanics and Microcontrollers
June 20-24, 6th-12th grades (half-day - morning session 8:30-12:00 or afternoon session 1:00-4:30)

Microcontrollers are those small chips in our cars, stereos, microwaves and washing machines that allow us to interact with their buttons and displays. Learn to use a microcontroller to make things move, beep and chirp based on light, sound, or proximity. Add some mechanics such as motors, wire and gears to build a robot, invent a new type of alarm clock, or...who knows? Dream up something silly, beautiful and fun, then make it. Even if you attended our Mechanics and Microcontrollers camp last summer, we have more tricks to show you, so you can build even more advanced games, robots, and toys. Cost: $100. Registration opens March 1, 2011. Registrations received before May 1, 2011 will receive a 25% discount! Camp sizes are limited and registration will remain open until full.
